Even I initially thought the mask was just a marketing gimmick... but wrong.
Country-opera cowboy Orville Peck is the real deal.
The masked Canadian queer persona dominated headlines and magazine covers with the release of his critically-acclaimed debut album Pony just last year. Featured tracks such as "Dead of Night" and "Queen of the Rodeo" incorporated stories and perspectives from an often-voiceless community into a musical genre normally dominated by southern lifestyle and political beliefs.
With a deep, theatrical baritone at the forefront, Peck charmed listeners and dazzled on the live stage, all while donning impeccable, imaginative and highly desired tailored suits. To celebrate April Fool's, the artist now shares the new "Summertime", his first single under a new agreement with Columbia Records.
"Watch each other falling, always catch the call and, whistle while we're walking, something inside me dies," he sings on the effort's second verse.
The idea of melancholy and loss, hinting that a young love may have been destroyed by external forces, are not images and emotions we want conveyed at the moment. However, promises of new horizons support vocals of perseverance, heightening the effect of the blossoming floral visuals in the nature-inspired accompanying music video.
"Summertime" maintains a similar chord structure and overall feeling of sorrow as its predecessors. Where the new song sets itself apart is Peck tirelessly working to keep a positive outlook while everything around him goes wrong. Things might be bleak, just keep one foot on the side where the grass is greener.
