Ke$ha's "Die Young" - Single Review

The moment I have been dreading since the decision to not release "Cannibal" as an official single has finally arrived. Auto-Tune queen Ke$ha is back with the first official offering from her upcoming second and a half album, Warrior. The new single, "Die Young", has been previewed with two videos of the young artist humming, then shouting the melody and lyrics to the song on a Tokyo subway. Last night, the full track leaked ahead of its official release date today and, while the song is nowhere near perfect, there are some qualities that can be appreciated from the new pop/rock infused single that will surely climb to the top of the charts once its officially hits iTunes and radio. I mean people have been dying for more drowned out music from the singer right?

"Die Young" quickly resembles the melody of Flo Rida's huge hit "Good Feeling", it is all I could really hear when I played the song for the first time. The intros of the two songs are nearly identical, but as soon as Ke$ha's spoken-word, "trying to be a real singer" vocals come through, the track turns into everything that embodies a signature song from the 25-year-old. When I said there were aspects of the song that should be complemented, it was one particular aspect I had in mind. For once in the singer's short career, at least when we are talking about the singles she has chosen to release, Ke$ha is not relying on Auto-Tune to make her voice sound presentable on radio. Oh no! Who will take over the Auto-Tune crown? I'm sure Rihanna will be happy to scoop it up.

Ke$sha true vocals are not actually that bad. My problem with the new single is that it follow the same formula the artist has been using since her debut. It contains the same structure, the same mediocre songwriting, the same half-ass performance. I know the singer can create club-bangers, some have actually had some meaning, but this new offering just falls flat for me. The artist has been reported to have enlisted some names in the alternative rock and rock genres to help her out on her upcoming record. If this is the product of those sessions, then I am afraid I am going to hear the same tired stuff present on Animal.

The song is average at best. Many critics and music sites are applauding the single and I do not really understand why. Am I missing something? Please tell me. I can see people listening to the song once, twice, maybe even three times, blasting it on the radio and singing along, but then they will start to realize the fun is over and the track falls into the generic bin that will be forgotten in about a month and will not be considered for any major awards. Have fun with it while you can. After about five listens, I have already had my fill. Ke$ha you can do better.
